Wellness Exams

Your pet’s health care begins with regular wellness checkups with a veterinarian. At Veterinary Medical Center of Caldwell, we recommend that all pets receive a complete physical examination at least once a year, though more frequent exams are encouraged. A wellness exam goes a long way toward prevention of rabies, fleas, parasites such as heartworm, and other treatable illnesses and conditions.

Regular exams allow us to detect symptoms of disease and illness in your pet and treat them before your pet becomes ill or feels pain.

As your pet ages, normal aging conditions occur that you may not be aware of. These can be diagnosed early during your pet’s regular wellness exam, or if needed, through routine laboratory tests. Conditions affecting older pets can be easily identified and treated before they become serious. We want your elderly pet to enjoy a long and healthy life.

What Happens During a Wellness Exam?

A thorough examination of the eyes, ears, nose, throat, musculoskeletal system, heart, lungs, abdomen, lymph nodes, neurologic system.  The exam may include blood work to test organ function.

Many vaccines are available for use in dogs and cats, but not every pet needs every available vaccine. Some vaccines are considered core vaccines and should be administered to all pets, whereas other vaccines are optional and may be recommended for pets based on a variety of factors, such as their risk for exposure to disease.

We maintain a complete inventory of pharmaceuticals, vitamins, shampoos, flea and tick control products and heartworm preventatives to meet the needs of your pet. We also carry a full line of prescription diets.

Dental hygiene is an important part of your pet’s health, and poor hygiene can be the cause of serious illness. If not treated properly, dental problems such as gingivitis and periodontal disease can often lead to serious systemic problems in your pet due to oral bacteria entering the bloodstream and stressing vital organs. Preventative veterinary care includes periodic dental exams and teeth cleanings.

Starting with your pet’s first exam, our doctors examine your pet’s mouth for any signs of discomfort or disease. Your doctor also sets up an individualized plan to care for your pet’s healthy teeth and mouth with home care and regular exams. When it becomes necessary to bring your dog or cat in for a dental cleaning, our doctors will anesthetize your pet to avoid any discomfort or stress.

Acupuncture is an ancient technique that originated in China thousands of years ago to prevent and treat illness, and relieve pain. This treatment regime, which involves inserting extremely fine needles into specific points on the body, was introduced to the United States during the latter half of the last century but is fast gaining widespread acceptance as an alternative therapy for people and animals. Acupuncture is performed by a board certified acupuncturist.
