Risk Reduction
Many technological and medical advancements have been made in veterinary medicine to significantly reduce the risk of anesthesia for pet surgery. However, there may still be some risks involved for certain pets as they undergo a procedure. Our standard procedure requires a comprehensive physical exam with a veterinarian prior to surgery. Additionally, we recommend pre-anesthetic blood screening, which can be performed at our hospital the day of the procedure. The exam in combination with the blood screening allows the veterinarian to rule out any potential health issues that may interfere with the procedure, such as clotting disorders, liver and kidney abnormalities, and anemia.
To further decrease any risk, pets will have an intravenous (IV) catheter placed prior to their surgery, allowing for the quick administration of fluids to help maintain their blood pressure and hydration. Patients are closely monitored throughout and after their surgery to ensure they are safe and recovering well. The veterinarian will create a customized home-care plan before discharge and answer any questions to promote a quick, safe, and comfortable recovery.
